Alumni Association
Former Erin Trujeque Memorial Scholarship Recipients Jacob Black and Chris Sais, along with Children's Cancer Fund of New Mexico, had an idea to start the Erin Trujeque Memorial Scholarship Alumni Association. Jacob was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma when he was 17 and received the ETM Scholarship from 2004-2009. Chris Sais, who also happens to have been Erin’s cousin, was also diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma at the age of 17. He was in the group of the first recipients of the Erin Trujeque Memorial Scholarship from 1991 through 1996. Because the Erin Trujeque Memorial Scholarship is unique in that it is only given to children from New Mexico who battled childhood cancer, we have a idea situation to connect past and present scholarship recipients.
We would like to start the Erin Trujeque Scholarship Association for former and current scholarship recipients. The formation of this group could serve multiple purposes. Even as adults, survivors of childhood cancer are somewhat set apart from others due to long-term effects of treatment. It is our hope that the alumni association will serve as a place where past and present scholarship recipients can develop friendships with other individuals who also face the same challenges, such as obtaining insurance, relationships, fertility and other various long term side effects of treatment. We have thought of a few ways the alumi association can help those facing cancer such as a mentorship program, fundraising, and volunteering.
On June 23, we hosted an organizational event. Someone generously donated the use of a suite at this Isotopes game. The event was a good staring point, but we look forward to getting to meet more of you with other events!
